Knit & Sew

Jul 13, 2018

I made this for my Grandmother’s 80th birthday. She has always been craftsy, whether sewing, crochet, knitting, making doll furniture, decorations and more.

She had a big sewing kit that I used to rummage through. Mostly, I liked to look at all the buttons she had in her collection. I think I get my pack-ratting from her as well.

I thought I would make her a cake to reflect her love of sewing with a nod to her knitting as well.

I went to the local thrift store and bought a bag of random buttons, which I molded in chocolate.

I bought a knit mold for fondant to cover the cake in.

I made a saskatoon berry filling and topped part of the cake with sugared saskatoon berries, reflecting where we both grew up. They were not easy to find, but luckily there was a farmer at the market who had some.

This was one project that went exactly as I imagined and the result was so close to what I had in my mind for it. Often, I find baking is about how you respond when things go wrong and how you problem solve out of accidents. This one had no issues at all.
