FEY

Add a little magic to your home or garden

Fey of the Forest

In the old growth forest there is a beauty and quiet within. Yet, surrounded by trees who have come 1000s of years before you, and who hopefully will outlast us all by another 1000, you can’t help but feel there are eyes watching from the hidden places. Moss & mushrooms; the smell of earth and the dappled light filtering through the leaves. Here there is magic. Here there are Fey.

Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand.

William Butler Yeats

What are Fey?

I create polymer clay figures using various Sculpey products. I create a wire armature, cover it in polymer caly to create the body, and then add clothes and accessories, mostly also with clay, but also some found & natural materials.

the figures have wire extending from the feet (if standing) and can be placed in a potted plant. You can use them outside, but they have not been weather proofed.

I also create little environments for them out of synthetic plants, found & natural items and other crafting materials and place them inside of bell jars, lanterns and other containers.

About Fey

my thoughts & inspriation on creating these figures.

THE CREATION OF FEY

Fairies have always represented the liminal, the outliers, the forbidden, and the things disallowed by society.

Visiting Vancouver Island’s old growth forests & camping at Mable Lake in the Okanagan inspired me to create Fey. The setting seemed perfect to find a fairy sitting on a large toadstool, up in a branch of an old cedar or resting on a moss-covered stump. I started making some to take with me when I went camping and photograph them in the places that felt most natural.

I’m a big Fantasy nerd, and I’ve always been drawn to magic characters and creatures. I found that so many stories about faries depict them as fragile and vulnerable or devious and dangerous. And most often, they are female.

I decided to start making Fey as male, blended with societally derived masculine and feminine traits.
